Retro Futurism in South Africa

Trendsetters Only has been at the forefront of reviving nostalgic retro and vintage fashion styles through its models from around the world in recent years. In 2019, the magazine published its first article on retro fashion, featuring models from Russia, Mexico, Nigeria, and China, who expressed their fashion-forward styles and provided background on what's worn in their respective countries. Since then, the magazine has continued to define a new fashion language through intercontinental fashion trends in its yearly magazine contribution.

In this article, we delve into another fashion style that has influenced recent trends - Retro Futurism. In recent years, Retro Futurism has gained popularity among trendsetters worldwide, with its unique blend of vintage and futuristic elements. Retro Futurism is all about taking past fashion trends and reimagining them with a futuristic twist, resulting in a distinct and innovative style that pushes the boundaries of fashion.

This article takes a closer look at Retro Futurism, exploring the style through the fashion perspectives of three stylish individuals - Lungile Sibanyoni (Lu), Keggo, and Makoma Mohgopo. Let's begin with Lu.

Lungile @golfwangmami

Lu (@golfwangmami) describes their style as a creative mix of goth, punk, y2k, and subversive fashion, and loves chrome accessories and anything with faux fur. They find inspiration from the creatives they engage with on a daily basis, including Pinterest, where they browse for outfit inspiration based on their aesthetics and spark new ideas on how to style their own clothing.

When it comes to foreign clothing brands, Lu draws inspiration from unique style choices from models in fashion shows and also enjoys experimenting with new and old pieces of clothing to recreate the outfits they love, rather than spending a fortune to buy the same look. Lu predicts that Retro Futurism will continue to evolve, incorporating more sustainable and eco-friendly materials and technology, and will become more accessible to a wider audience.

Next up is Keggo. She describes her style as edgy and minimal, with a keen eye for accessories, and an affinity for colorful and fruity fashion. When asked about her style inspirations, Keggo explained that she has lived a diverse life and has drawn inspiration from many outlets. Currently, she finds herself drawn to the avant-garde fashion of Tokyo and Paris.

Keggo (@ft.wo0ds) is strongly influenced by foreign clothing brands that offer fresh styles and provide new platforms for artistic expression. She believes that Retro Futurism is an exciting fashion movement that represents a fusion of past and future elements, creating a new space for creativity and innovation. Keggo sees the future of Retro Futurism as a more inclusive movement, with designers and brands incorporating diverse cultural and social influences into their designs.

Makoma Mohgopo, known as @afro.ditey, expresses her personal style as authentic and limitless. She believes in dressing to impress, and her wardrobe is a reflection of her emotions and daily life experiences. Makoma enjoys experimenting with various clothing styles, combining streetwear with high-end wear to create unique and bold outfits.

@afro.ditey

Makoma finds inspiration in foreign clothing brands, which she believes provide an excellent platform for new artistry and style inspiration, even in South Africa. When asked about the future of Retro Futurism, She believes that it will continue to evolve by incorporating sustainability and ethical fashion practices. Retro fashion can never be the future, but it can be incorporated into the future by reinventing and giving a modern twist to the old styles. She embraces the idea of making the old new and creating new trends with a vintage vibe. She sees Retro Futurism as a way to express individuality and creativity, while also promoting social and environmental responsibility.

In addition, the stylist behind the design of the outfit is Voodoo who is also known by @blackvoodoogirl on social media gave us a little more details about their styling process. Describing their style as "haute couture mixed with elements of street style and modern grunge," a combination that perfectly embodies the retro-futurism aesthetic. Voodoo also draws inspiration from her brand "crippledmnd" and from everything and everyone, but she gravitates towards free thinkers and misfits, where her creative juices flow the most. "I take small elements from everywhere and make it crippledmnd,". Voodoo is also influenced by foreign clothing brands like Yohji Yamamoto and Heaven by Marc Jacobs, who inspire them to push the boundaries even further with their designs.

In conclusion, retro-futurism is a style that continues to captivate trendsetters worldwide, bringing nostalgia and new creativity together to create unique and innovative outfits. Each person expresses their personal style with authenticity and limitless creativity, drawing inspiration from diverse sources online and incorporating various clothing brands into their outfits.
